Bakkafjörður is a wide inlet in east Iceland. On its eastern shore is the village Höfn, which is more commonly associated with the inlet and called simply Bakkafjörður. The village is the regional service center for Skeggjastaðahreppur district.
The main industries in this area are seasonal inshore fisheries and farming. An excellent overview of the region can be enjoyed at Sandvíkurheiði, at a height of 275 meters.
A favored attraction in this area is the oldest church in eastern Iceland, a wood structure built in 1845 by the Rev. Hóseas Árnason. Permission to view the church must be obtained at Skeggjastaðir, and is readily given. Also worth seeing is the lighthouse at Steintún, reached by driving along Kötlunesvegur road and then walking another 30-60 minutes to the lighthouse. This is a wonderful hike through a magnificent landscape of inlets, cliffs and rich bird life.
The mountain Gunnólfsvíkurfjall, between Þórshöfn and Bakkafjörður, rises to a height of 719 meters above sea level.
