Dalvík


Dalvík is a community with a population of 2000 in northern Eyjafjörður fjord, its centre is the town of Dalvík. The district has a lot to offer the tourist in winter as well as summer. The natural beauty of Tröllaskagi is well known, long, deep and green valleys between high (1.200-1.400 meters) mountains give a great opportunity for hiking in summer and cross country skiing in winter. 

The bird life in Svarfaðadalur Nature Reserve is especially rich in species such as waterfowl, gees, ducks and waders. There is excellent fishing booth in the sea and in rivers and lakes. In autumn the mountains are covered with wild blueberries and crowberries.

The employment is a mix of fishing, agriculture and High Tec industry. 

From the beginning a particularly abundant cultural and social live has thrived in the district, especially singing and acting.

The Folk museum in Dalvík is of particular interest, one section is devoted to birds and animals, among them a stuffed polar bear. Another to the memory of Kristján Eldjárn Iceland's 3rd President and one in memory of Jóhann the giant Pétursson the tallest Icelander in memory 2 meters 34 centimetres, they were booth born and bred in Svarfaðardalur.

All necessary services are found in Dalvík garages, gas stations, restaurants, craft shops, pharmacy, health care centre, wine shop, bank and supermarket.

Varied accommodations are available campsites, farm accommodation and guesthouses, some of which are open year round.

It is difficult to guide the visitors of Dalvík when it comes to outdoor activities, as the possibilities are endless, whether for light mountain hikes or short strolls. There is an excellent new swimming pool and one of the best ski areas in the country, with slopes for everyone from beginner to champions, plus cross country skiing tracks.

There is a nine-hole golf course in Svarfaðardalur valley, in beautiful surroundings by the river. Various leisure activities can be found in the area, including deep-sea fishing, angling, pleasure cruises and whale watching trips. The ferry to Grímsey Island sails from Dalvík.

For those visiting Dalvík in early summer an evening drive to Ólafsfjarðarmúli to watch the midnight sun is not to be missed. The colours as the sun sets on the sea and rises again are magnificent.
