Biskupstungur
Biskupstungur in the inner part of Árnessýsla, is one of the most-visited districts in Iceland. Wide, open spaces with panoramic views, unspoilt nature, green and peaceful places to relax and dramatic landscapes are found all over Biskupstungur. There are two villages in Biskupstungur, Reykholt has a community centre, geothermal swimming pool etc. and Laugarás a village in a hollow low hills, on the eastern bank of Hvítá river. Known for its greenhouses, producing cut flowers, tomatoes and cucumbers. A restaurant operates in Aratunga community centre during the summer, serving travellers and people who stay in many summer chalets in the vicinity. Various hiking trails and marked footpaths make Haukadalur an interesting place to explore, with diverse plant life. Haukadalur´s most famous attraction is the geothermal field named after the sprouting Geysir. A hotel and shop are located besides Geysir field, which is a short distance by road from Gullfoss falls and Kjölur mountain track to the interior. Skálholt a bishopric from 1056 to 1796, and the ecclastical partly political and cultural centre of the nation. Cultural traditions live on here to day with summer concerts. Countless leisure activities are on offer in Biskupstungur. There are many interesting hiking and walking trails, several horse rentals, angling permits can be obtained, river rafting on river Hvítá, and a nine-hole golf course in Úthlíð just to mention a few.
